I turned the key to lock the side door of the lunchette when Maggie walked up.
"Carol has decided to shut it down for the day." She sounded disappointed. I couldn't blame her. It had been a very successful event for her gallery. However, after news of Amelia's death broke, I wasn't surprised that Carol Pugman had pulled the proverbial plug and decided to cut the day short.
"I had a line of customers forming. They were eagerly waiting to meet Raven." That's right. I remembered that Maggie had scheduled an artist signing for the afternoon. She released a sigh. "I've called Raven and told her not to come."
"Maybe you can reschedule the signing for tomorrow?" I suggested.
Maggie was already shaking her head. "I tried, but Raven is already committed to another event down in the city. We can't make it work."
"That's too bad. I'm sure customers will still buy art whether the artist is present or not. You've got so much great stuff to offer."
"I suppose. I was just really excited for this part of the weekend. Having the artist present in my booth would have been a great way to promote High Altitude."
"I don't think you need Raven to do that. You're doing a great job promoting the gallery yourself. I've seen many shoppers walking around with one of your beautiful prints in hand today."
I saw a small smile break on Maggie's face. "I guess you're right." She dropped her expression again. "Such awful news about that jeweler." She shook her head. "Guess you just never know when your time is up." Aha. It seemed news of Amelia's death had made the rounds, but the fact that it had been foul play had been conveniently left out. I was glad of that. Nothing could send a crowd into panic mode faster than news of murder.
"Do you know what happened?" She asked. "Some sort of accident I assume?"
"I heard about the death, but I don't know any details." I felt bad lying to my friend, but it was all in service of my investigation. It would be much easier to casually chat with some of the fair attendees if they weren't swirled up in panic.
"It's really a shame." Maggie shook her head again. "The woman was not terribly friendly, but her death is shocking nonetheless."
We looked toward the fair. Things were obviously winding down for the day. "Well," Maggie said. "I should get back and start cleaning up."
"Will the fair be open tomorrow?" I asked. I sure hoped so. It was going to be hard to investigate a murder if my potential suspects headed home early.
"Yes, thank goodness. Too much money and planning went into this event to cancel. Carol has assured us we'll be back to regular hours tomorrow. Barring any further unexpected deaths, I suppose," she added.
"I've got the day off so I'll come by tomorrow. I'm still searching for the right art for my cabin."
Maggie did a quick little clap. "I can help you with that. See you later.
